Thread Structure

The gilt version is approximately 3/16" wide, while the silver version measures 1/4" wide. This metal thread has been over a decade in the making—I've been searching for it for years. The machinery required to produce it is complex, and, as it turns out, only one company still has the equipment (though it broke during the production of my large batch, so fingers crossed it can be fixed). The process involves two wires being counter-spiraled, then stretched and rolled flat to create this unique, stunning thread.

Uses of Gilt or Silver Plated Mignardise

This metal thread trims are tiny and were used extensively on 17th century stumpwork and up to today on Eastern European folk costume.  The gilt version is petite and close to the size used on 17th century stumpwork to edge costume on figures emulating metallic lace of the period.  The silver version is slightly larger and can still be used that way but opens up all kinds of other ideas to decorate embroidery.
