Course Overview

This new sampler design combines both counted stitches and free embroidery techniques, featuring crinkle silk. Crinkle silk, an American invention from the late Colonial Era to the 1830s, was created by unraveling or untwisting silk threads. The natural twist would cause the filament to kink, creating a distinctive wave effect when worked in satin stitches. Originally developed in northern Massachusetts or Boston, this technique spread throughout the colonies and early United States, becoming a popular method for working samplers.

The light play created by crinkle silk adds a unique texture and depth to your work, making it a fantastic technique to learn for a more authentic, period-inspired look in your samplers. This project will focus on mastering the use of untwisted thread and incorporating it into your stitching.

The design itself is a small, manageable size—about 7" x 10"—and features a large, beautiful flower display at the bottom. Using colors of blue, green, red, yellow, pink, and neutral browns, the design is inspired by various samplers from the period, offering a perfect balance of historical charm and personal creativity.
