Course Overview

In 17th-century boarding schools, young ladies used finger-braided lacet to form flower petals, stems, and bouquets using the simple whip stitch, which they would either place in their embroidered caskets or give as tokens of affection. Many examples of these delicate creations can be found in museum and private collections, including a stunning set at the Ashmolean Museum. Flowers like daisies, strawberries, pansies, and other beautiful flora were crafted with intricate serpentine leaves, showcasing the young ladies’ skill and creativity.

This 3-month course will teach you the basics of forming petals, leaves, and berries, and guide you through assembling them into standalone stems or little bouquets. These charming creations are perfect for small vases, shadow boxes, boutonnieres, or as hidden surprises inside the drawers or internal gardens of your casket.

Depending on how many flowers you create, you’ll be able to make four to five bouquets similar to the ones pictured.

If you’ve taken the Four Seasons Project or Stitch Along, much of the information will be familiar, though there will be at least two new flower types to add to your collection.
