Description
The definitive book on the Verlander samplers of Germany. Author Andrea Madadi studied these distinctive rural samplers from the Hamburg region, resulting in an exhibition at the Bergedorfer Museumslandschaft in 2018/19 and the publication of this book in 2021. Ms. Madadi lays out the cultural area, the motifs and their origins, influence from other cultures, and the associated four other sampler types that girls worked in addition to our favorite black or red graphic pieces. I have long been a fan of the samplers of this region and wanted to know more so was thrilled when this book came out.
Unfortunately, like many museum exhibition books in Germany, you can't order them online but must send a wire transfer which your bank will charge you a significant fee to do. I decided that I would bring a large box of these books over for my shop just so I could get a copy myself.
It was clear that the book was full of interesting and new research and so I asked the museum if I could use Google Translate to provide an English translation and they agreed. A 23-page translation of all the text and figure captions is included, along with footnotes on art history references you might not be familiar with.
