Thread Structure
This thread is a gilt or silver over copper strip that is wound around a white silk core thread with full coverage for the Gilt or 90% Silver on 6-ends of Silk. For the Gilt Special Tambour, the core is cotton and a special counter-winding process is used at the end to take over twist out of the thread so it lays limp and easier to stitch with. The 6-end Silk is slightly thinner than the Special Tambour.
Uses of Gilt or 90% Silver on 6-end Silk or Gilt Special Tambour
These three threads were custom-made for me to work Gobelin stitch backgrounds in 17th-century pieces, a technique often found in sweet bags from the period. The Gilt Special Tambour thread also works beautifully for creating a fine, elegant plaited braid.
A tube of Special Tambour will cover approximately 26 square inches of linen worked in half cross over two threads. They’re also perfect for delicate 17th-century stitches like plaited braid, reverse chain, Ceylon, and ladder, especially when a finer, more intricate vine or spot is needed.
