Handmade wove and laid papers by MacGregor Papers that are matches to those used historically on embroidered caskets.   They are all Dark Holbart acid free linen rag paper which is used in museum restoration of books and other paper-based artifacts.

Uses of Lining Papers

These archival papers were used to cover the majority of the surfaces of caskets before silk and velvet linings, as well as embroidery, were applied. Known for their strength and flexibility when wet, these papers provide the most straightforward method for covering the boxes. They are also the same type used by paper conservators to repair museum artifacts, ensuring long-lasting durability.

Purple paper is the most common lining found in caskets, often paired with pink silks. The original purple paper starts as a rich, deep purple with a hint of red, and over time, it ages into a faintly purple-greyish cream. As the paper oxidizes, the red tones in the purple become more pronounced. I've replicated this purple color to closely match the original shades seen in historical pieces.

An alternative cream paper is also available, which is ideal for backing your embroidery or for areas that will be embroidered. It's also a great option for lining the casket if you prefer a lighter, neutral background that pairs well with your chosen silks and velvets.

The number of papers needed to cover your casket depends on the techniques and colors you choose. Typically, 2-3 sheets of cream paper will cover the exterior of either the flat or double casket. For the inside of a flat casket, 2 sheets should be enough, while a double casket will require about 3-4 sheets. Additional sheets will be necessary for backing the embroidered pieces before attaching them to the casket. You will need 1 piece of paper for each mirror and 1-2 sheets for the casket, depending on how the casket pieces are laid out on frames.

Please note, these custom materials are in limited supply and are reserved exclusively for students of Thistle Threads. Purple paper is being discontinued, so please email me to inquire about availability before it's gone.
