Thread Structure
This thread is a gilt or silver over copper strip that is wound around a yellow or white silk core thread with full coverage.
Uses of Gilt or Silver Passing #4 on Silk
These threads were specially reproduced to recreate the plaited braid used in the Plimoth Jacket Project. A key highlight was using a silk core to achieve the smooth wrapping and suppleness of the original threads. These real metal threads have quickly become my favorite for 17th-century metal stitches, including plaited braid, reverse chain, Ceylon, ladder, and more.
To get the best results, use a Japanese needle. It helps prevent the thread from shredding and creates a clean hole in the linen for easy stitching. The #9/10 Japanese needle pairs particularly well with the #4 Smooth Passing thread.
