Each spool of Soie Gobelin has 50 meters of thread and threads
Thread Structure
Soie Gobelin is a 2-ply highly twisted filament silk, supplied on the tube in a single strand. It is usually used non-divided, straight from the spool. In rare cases, it can be untwisted into the original two untwisted plies that then retain the kink in the ply from the twisting process. This replicates the look of 18th century American samplers when using the untwisted silk for satin stitch.
Uses of Soie Gobelin
Soie Gobelin is a highly versatile thread prized for its fine weight and tightly twisted structure. It is approximately the same thickness as Au Ver a Soie 100/3, twice the thickness of a strand of Soie Paris, and half the thickness of Soie Perlee. This makes it an excellent substitute for 100/3 in sampler work, while its tighter twist also makes it easier to handle than two plies of Soie Paris in counted thread embroidery.
Ideal for a variety of standard embroidery stitches, such as satin stitch and French knots, Soie Gobelin is especially well-suited for creating flowers, dresses, drapes, leaves, and other larger pieces in needlelace or stumpwork. Its strong filament silk composition also makes it an excellent choice for couching, especially when working with thicker gimps, silk purls, or silk-covered plates, as well as for use with metal threads.
