Thread Structure

Tiny Scroll Trim is an intricate passementerie element for trimming pillows, upholstery and integrating into larger trims.

Typically, these elements are crafted from bundles of filament silk which are wrapped by a tight two color twist and held all together with a silk covered wire. The silk bundles are arranged in a serpentine pattern on a small loom, then secured in place with a silk-covered wire. This technique creates the signature Tiny Scroll Trim structure.

To work with the Tiny Scroll Trim, couch it invisibly onto the edge of your ornament with a thread of the same color.  Place tape around the ends to allow you to push it into the opening between ornament halves or the hole for stuffing a pincushion.

Uses of Chardon Coupe and Bouclette

During a visit to a passementerie factory, I immediately recognized these trims fun possibilities to edge ornaments and other three-dimensional embroidery projects. Passementerie elements were often incorporated into stumpwork designs during this period, adding texture and dimension to the artwork.

Other creative uses include spiraling short lengths to form the center of a flower or wrapping them around an ornament to create both a hanger and trim in a single, seamless application.
