Thread Structure
Striped Silk Purl #2 is crafted by first wrapping copper wire with delicate filament silk. A second pass is made to cover the silk-wrapped wire with a second silk color, giving it a striped appearance. This silk-covered wire is then wrapped around a mandrel (or "needle") to form a tightly wound spring shape. The result is a spiral of color around the silk purl.
The diameter of the purl is determined by the size of the needle used during the coiling process. The silk colors perfectly match the Pipers Silk line, as well as the silk checks and tiny silk purls, offering a cohesive look across various embroidery elements.
Uses of Striped Silk Purl #2
Striped silk purls can be couched into place using matching silk threads, but I prefer using the TIRE silk threads for this thread. These purls can be couched to outline and fill figures, creating detailed designs. Often, the purls are cut into shorter segments, threaded onto silk, and sewn in place to form raised loops that stand proud from the fabric. This technique is especially effective for filling entire flowers, adding texture and dimension to the embroidery.
