Course Description

This is a read-only version of the very popular Cabinet of Curiosities course. Spanning 18 months and over 1000 pages of information and photos, the read-only version provides access to the course content, but without the associated kits. The instructions and history sections are downloadable, but please note that no kits are provided for the course.

This course is perfect for anyone currently taking a project class related to embroidered caskets, such as Harmony with Nature, Five Senses, or Four Seasons. It offers comprehensive historical context about the period, along with stories about the cabinets, designs, bottles, inkwells, boxes, casket toys, and beaded baskets. You’ll also find discussions on other topics related to embroidered cabinets, plus over 1000 close-up photos of historic pieces.

While the kits for the original small projects included in the course are not available, students can still gather materials and make these projects independently. Due to ongoing supply chain challenges, the kits are no longer provided, although some materials have recently become available for select projects as mentioned above.

Included in the course are instructions for several mini-projects, as well as a trinket box, plus access to all the finishing videos for various cabinet sizes and configurations.

The course also grants access to an extensive collection of motifs and pre-designed caskets, which can be used to modify a casket you’re currently working on, or to create 17th-century-themed pictures. Templates for the outside of the caskets I had produced are part of the course, and some skilled woodworkers have used these templates to fabricate boxes with simpler internal parts to match. However, there are no instructions for fabricating the boxes themselves.

From time to time, a student will return a casket they’ve decided not to continue working on (often due to changes in health), and I make these available for purchase along with their finishing materials and course access. Additionally, I maintain a list of students who have completed the Cabinet of Curiosities course and are looking for specific cabinet types, and I try to match people up (though I can’t guarantee availability).

I currently have 160 spots available in my licensing agreements for historic photos used in the course.

Course Flexibility

At Thistle Threads, we understand that life’s commitments can make it difficult to focus on a course every month. That’s why my courses are designed to be self-paced, allowing you to learn at your own rhythm. You can take breaks when needed, and the course material will remain available to you, often serving as a valuable reference for future projects once completed.

Course Access and Delivery

Upon the start date of the course, you’ll receive a username and password to access my teaching site on the Thinkific platform. Logging in will immediately give you access to the first lesson, ready for download. Course materials will primarily be provided in PDF format, but may also include additional resources like stitch diagram animations, videos, or Pinterest board links.

Once the course is completed, you’ll receive access to non-public YouTube playlists, where videos and animations will be available for future reference and continued learning.

Access Timeframe

Course materials must be downloaded within three months of the course's conclusion. During the course, all lessons—including new ones and previously released content—will be accessible. So, if you’re unable to log in during a month, you can always catch up by reviewing any missed lessons at your own pace.

Prerequisites

Nothing but an interest in historical embroidery of the 17th century is needed for this course.
