Thread Structure
Silk Facette Gimp starts with a core thread made from cream soie gobelin. A very thick bundle of cream soie gobelin is tightly overwrapped with a single wire over an extended period, which causes the bundle to take on a continuous serpentine shape. Once the core is formed, it is further overwrapped with filament silk in the color of your choice, allowing the gimp to retain its distinctive serpentine structure. A key distinguishing feature of this product is the use of silk as the core, as opposed to cotton, rayon, or nylon, which are commonly found in modern versions. The included wire allows this thread to be shaped.
Uses of Silk Facette Gimp
Silk Facette Gimp can be couched as a line, looped, or bent back and forth to create fills. For the best results, pair it with a matching thread from the Cabinet of Curiosities Historic Colors Collection. With a 1mm diameter and a wire core, the gimp is difficult to sink through fabric, so it should be cut, leaving the cut end on the surface.
For a clean, polished finish when cutting, apply a small dab of rice paste glue to the area you plan to cut and allow it to dry. Then, cut through the glued section to achieve a neat edge.
Silk Facette Gimp can be combined with other gimps, purls, or plates to fill spaces or create contrasting textures along lines.
